Mwanamugimu Essay Contest

Contest Rules:

  1. Essay theme: The meaning of “Mwanamugimu” is an African proverb based from the Republic of Uganda which means “from little acorns come mighty oaks.” Staying aligned with its history, for this year's Project Mwanamugimu Essay, students in grades 6-8 will find an African proverb that resonates with them and makes them want to be greater. Then write a 250-word essay describing why they chose that proverb, what it means to them, and from  what cultural region or tribe that proverb came from.

  2. Essay must be written by a students in grades 6-8 from the following North Carolina counties:

    • Pitt​

    • Lenoir

    • Greene

    • Craven

  3. Essay must be at least 250 words no more than 300 words typed, double spaced, legible and professional font. 

  4. Title page should be included: 

    • Student’s first and last name

    • Student’s home address

    • Student’s contact phone number

    • Student’s school name and grade level

  5. All essays should be typed in black font so that it can be copied for review by essay contest judges

  6. Submission deadline: February 28th
